Biography

Melissa lives in Mano De León, Jocotenango, with her mother and father. Their house is made of sheet metal and wood with a dirt floor. They have no running water or electricity in the house and so have to get their water from a well. Melissa shares a bed with her parents. Melissa’s father works in the fields and earns around Q1600 ($213) a month. Melissa’s mother is currently pregnant and so is not working. This year, Melissa is in first grade. Melissa’s favourite colour is pink and her favourite food is sausages. Her favourite animals are butterflies. In her free time she likes to play with dolls. When she is older, Melissa would like to sell tortillas. Her favourite subject in school is art and her goal for this year is to learn how to read. If she could have any superpower, Melissa would have the power to fly. If she had $1 million, Melissa would use it to buy sausages and water for her and her family.
